Located on the Happy road connecting the towns of Dong Van and Meo Vac, Ma Pi Leng is the name of the most treacherous mountain pass, approximately 20 km in length, in Hagiang Province, Vietnam.
The Happy Road was built by thousands of volunteers from the 16 ethnic groups of 8 provinces in the Northern region in 6 years, from 1959 to 1965. For more than 2 million work days, on which the pass of Ma Pi Leng, the most dangerous part, where workers had to hang on the cliff to built, was completed in 11 months.
The dangerous, towering and rugged mountains pointed to the sky with all kind of bizarre shapes from upright to skew, some are green but usually they are brown and gray void.
Pai Lung Steep winding with many curves before entering Ma Pi Leng Pass.
Hanging on the back of the mountain, the pass hides in the clouds with other villages. According to Do Doan Hoang, the author of the Miracle Ma Pi Leng said, “in the history of building roads and tracks, this is the most challenging of all. Overcome the highest plateau, account the most number of the workforce for the longest time, and also the most tragic. In the end, there is a cemetery built for those have died in the process of building the pass.”
The mountain pass is dangerously meandering. Beneath is the Nho Que River splitting the two landmarks the Ma Pi Leng mountain top and Sam Pun, the border posts and the custom gate to China.
The winding road goes through the cliffs and reach Ma Pi Leng peak at the height of 2000 m.
With rugged terrain and spectacular unspoiled scenery, Ma Pi Leng Pass deserved to have a place in the “big four Pass” in northern Vietnam (along with Pha Din Pass, Pass O Quy Ho and Khau Pha Pass).
You will encounter many Hmong people walking on the road passes as they are going to the market in Dong Van and Meo Vac. Sometimes there are a few drunken people, sleeping innocently on road.
At the end of the pass is the threshold of Sam Pun – Meo Vac. If you lucky, you can find some tea houses along the road on a beautiful day. In these teahouses, there is nothing more than a few simple wood tables, some chairs with some drinks and old ceramic bowls. There will be some old men sitting on the porch smoking refreshingly, the women and the children curiously looking at you. The life in this dangerous place is so simple.
Standing on top of the pass, travelers will burst in emotion, and will be overwhelmed by the majestic space. The journey to conquer the rugged gorge ends with many emotions, and the beautiful scenery is transforming vividly that you will want to come back.
